Andrew Van Tassel is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator based in New York City.
Andrew’s music is rooted in traditional and contemporary jazz, with influences from classical, indie-rock, and folk music. His upcoming release on Tone Rogue Records, It’s Where You Are, features some of the brightest young musicians in the New York music scene including Julian Shore, Ben Eunson, Michael Thomas, Edward Perez, and Colin Stranahan.
Currently Andrew resides in New York City where he performs as a sideman and leader of his own band. After focusing several years on developing his trio playing with bass and drums at the Bar Next Door in Manhattan, Andrew continues to perform traditional jazz repertoire while also exploring new sounds, structures, and ideas with his own group. He has also been enjoying bi-coastal orchestral based musical collaborations as a soloist and improviser.
Andrew’s formal education has taken him to prestigious schools including the Manhattan School of Music, The University of North Carolina, and the New England Conservatory. While earning his Master’s Degree on scholarship at NEC, he honed his skills under the tutelage of jazz luminaries including Jerry Bergonzi, Donny McCaslin, John McNeil, and MacArthur Fellows Jason Moran and Miguel Zenon. It was during this time that he was able to begin to develop his own approach to both his instrument and improvisation.
As a performer he has received accolades by the likes of the Loyola Jazz Festival, the University of North Carolina, the New England Conservatory, and more. Andrew is now establishing himself as an emerging voice in the New York music scene.
