Born in Beijing, China and now based in New York City, Annie Chen is a vocalist, composer and bandleader exploring original contemporary jazz music in today’s New York jazz scene. Her original septet incorporates many different types of music into a modern jazz setting, with influences from Chinese traditional, classical, gospel, middle-eastern, eastern European and even alternative rock music. It features extensive improvisation and strong arrangements to support Annie’s beautiful compositions and her powerful voice. Audiences across the world have already been touched by her fresh and interesting compositions and beautiful singing. As part of her CD release tour, the group performed at the Shanghai International Jazz Festival (JZ Festival 2014) as well as festivals in Beijing and Hangzhou and did intense 3 months China tour with her New York group in 2015. Locally in New York City, they can be found playing at many good jazz venues,such as Shape Shifter Lab, Cornelia Street Cafe, Club Bonafide, Nublu, Drom, Tomi Jazz, Shrine, Silvana etc. The highlight of 2014 for her group was being a part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival in New York, and she became the first Chinese jazz musician who joined this festival in Chinese jazz history. On 26th Feb.2016, her original project was sponsored by NEA(The National Endowment for the Arts) and she lead her septet to perform in the historic jazz venue – Flushing Town Hall for her composition concert and got lots of great feedback from audiences and media. And also she just got a great interview by journalist Alan Young from “New York Music Dairy”, title is “Annie Chen brings her fearlessly eclectic, soulful, smart new jazz compositions to Manhattan”. And she was invited by Blue Note Beijing and perform with her quintet in Dec, got so much great feedback for her singing and compositions, and also she did a interview by Blue Note Beijing in Jan. 2017.
