Bobby Spellman’s Revenge of the Cool Nonet
Set Times: 9:30 pm
Initially assembled in 2012 to perform the timeless classics from the Birth of the Cool, Bobby Spellman’s Revenge of the Cool Nonet has evolved into a vehicle for the colorful 21st century compositions of its members and collaborators. Based on the unconventional instrumentation originally conceived in Gil Evans’s basement apartment in the 1940’s, the nonet continues to perform compositions and arrangements by John Lewis, Gerry Mulligan, and Gil Evans, as well as re-arrangements of the classic large ensemble collaborations between Evans and Miles Davis. The group also fosters new compositions by trumpeter Bobby Spellman and his collaborators, who strive to explore and expand the possibilities of Miles’s instrumentation in a modern context. In particular, the group serves as an outlet for swinging and adventurous new music based on Spellman’s in-depth study of George Russell’s Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organization.
