The “Not So Big Band” is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Lou Caputo. It is an attempt to join the spontaneity of free-blown small group jazz with the power and gravity of a big band. It consists of twelve musicians as opposed to the sixteen-piece or larger variety. This band is a working group and has been together for more than 15 years. Our varied musical library attempts to cover a wide range of styles that still fall into the category of modern jazz. The band has three albums out (Urban Still Life & Not So Big Band) that have enjoyed a good deal of airplay and have been very well received. The band’s third release is entitled “Uh Oh!” which placed in the top 40 of jazz radio playlist and was chosen as the CD of the week by Memphis radio station WMUR.
Most recently the “Not So Big Band” was voted #1 Big Band by Arnaldo DeSoutrio’s Jazz Station Awards of the Brazilian Jazz site “Jazz Bossa & Beyond.” Also receiving mention where several band members John Eckert on trumpet Warren Smith on vibraphone Dale Turk on Tuba as well as myself on Baritone Saxophone.
Our performance’s over the last 15 years include appearances at some of the tristate area’s prominent jazz rooms including The Zinc Bar, Club Bonafide, Trumpets and Garage. Through the years we have had regular performances at the Midtown Jazz series at St Peter’s Church, The Baha’i Center and concerts at Hofstra, Bloomfield and Montclair Universities.
We embrace a wide spectrum of approaches as our catalogue can attest. Hopefully we are successful in presenting a portrait of that eclecticism.
