French born drummer Jean-marie Corrois [JM] was born and raised in the city of Tours, [located in the Loire Valley] and started his career as a young drummer with the Brazilian Band Saravah and the African Band Trans African Express. His passion for World Music and Jazz took him to Paris in 1985 where he attended the only Jazz Music School at the time, the CIM. There, he met other talented musicians and composers, performing in major Jazz Clubs and Festivals, such as New Morning and the Jazz à Viennes Festival.
As a versatile, seasoned drummer, Jean-marie accompanied many great artists during his 15 years in Paris. Together with the American singer Ilene Barnes, they showcased for Sony Music and performed throughout Paris and the province. In 2000, JM moved to the US, performing initially as a show band drummer in South Florida and the surrounding Islands. This experience expanded and strengthened his expertise in Latin and Caribbean music, directly influencing his style.
At his core, the focus remains Jazz, which was pivotal in the decision to move to Boston in 2004 to perform with some Berklee faculty friends…
soon he found himself playing in the Boston area’s major clubs like Regatta Bar, Scullers…
In 2008, JM recorded under the name Jean-marie Corrois Quartet, some original french compositions. “Kaya was born”. Over the next couple years, this band successfully toured, playing numerous clubs in New England.
Always seeking challenges and new experiences in rhythms, JM did some innovative collaborative works with tabla masters from India, performing exciting drums/tabla duoshe calls “dialogues in percussion”.
2015 takes him back to the studio to record his second CD with a fresh talented new team of musicians.
Jean-marie will release a new project early 2016. During the past 10 years, JM has had numerous opportunities to perform in New York City with various bands. This December he is pleased to present his new quartet to the Bonafide Club . Join the JMC Quartet for an evening of original Jazz!
