Jihye Lee Orchestra

Jihye Lee is a rising Korean composer currently enrolled at the Manhattan School of Music. She is pursuing her master of Jazz Composition degree under the instruction of Jim McNeely. She is currently in the process of producing her first Orchestra album, April, with co-producer Greg Hopkins. The album will be released in May 2016.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music (with a dual major in Jazz Composition and Vocal Performance) who has awarded both Berklee Asia Tour and CJ Scholarship, Jihye is a versatile musician and composer. She studied Jazz Composition and Arranging with many of Berklee’s most distinguished faculty members, such as Greg Hopkins and Ayn Inserto.  Private studies with renowned composers and multi-Grammy Award recipients Maria Schneider and Terrence Blanchard. plus workshops/performances with John Clayton and Robin Eubanks supplemented her formal education.

Winner of the 2nd Annual Jazz Composition Contest for Women Composers, Jihye Had her composition performed and recorded live by the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra featuring saxophonist Grace Kelly, in November 2014, as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.

Recipient of the 2013 and 2014 Duke Ellington Awards and the 2013 Gil Evans Award for Jazz Composition, Jihye has had the honor of hearing her works performed by The Greg Hopkins Concert Jazz Orchestra; Eric Gould’s Best of Jazz Composition Concerts in Spring 2013, Fall 2014, and Spring 2014; and The Lisa Thorson Quartet.

Aside from honing her craft in Jazz Composition, Jihye is a distinguished vocalist and singer-songwriter, having received the 2014 Voice Department Achievement award and 2013 Voice Department Outstanding Performer award for her achievements within the Berklee Voice Department. She also released an EP and an album in her hometown of Seoul, South Korea, before beginning her studies at Berklee.
