Kazuki Yamanaka is a jazz saxophonist and composer born in 1985 in Saitama, Japan.
He started playing saxophone at middle school’s wind band and became interested in jazz when he first listened to Sadao Watanabe live in Tokyo before entering university, where he began to play jazz.
After graduation from Kyoto University, he worked at a TV production but quit in a year and a half to become a musician, which he really wanted to pursue in his life.
After studying jazz privately with Atsushi Ikeda (sax) and Yuichi Inoue (piano) and having gigs in and around Tokyo for 3 years, he moved to New York to study jazz at State University of New York Purchase College, where he took a master degree of music in 2014.
He studied with masters such as Jon Gordon (sax), Gary Smulyan (sax), Hal Galper (piano), John Abercrombie (guitar), Todd Coolman (bass), Jon Faddis (trumpet) and Steve Wilson(sax) at the school as well as took private lessons in New York City from Jim Snidero (sax), Steve Slagle (sax) and Miguel Zenon (sax).
As soon as he graduated, he had a tour of his own group in Japan in June 2014.
He moved back to New York after the short stay in Japan and started activities as a professional artist in NYC.
He has performed regularly at ShapeShifter Lab, Caffe Vivaldi, Somethin’ Jazz Club, Silavana, The Shrine, Tomi Jazz, among others.
His debut album “Songs Unconscious-minded” was recorded with Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Fabian Almazan (piano), Linda Oh (bass) and E.J.Strickland (drums) on June 2015.
The album, which consists of all original compositions of his, will be released on August 2015.
