R&B singer-songwriter LaRita Gaskins is a DC native who’s shared the stage with greats like Aretha Franklin, Rick James, Patti LaBelle, Debbie Harry and more. More recently, she’s made the musical move into smooth jazz, and her latest project, the retro soul single “Funk in De Pocket,” reflects that groove. For this show at Club Bonafide in New York, Gaskins pays tribute to two of the best R&B acts ever — Tina Turner & Earth, Wind & Fire.
Brought up in a rich music environment, many of LaRita’s family members were musically inspired and several have established professional careers in the music industry performing gospel,rhythm and blues, and jazz music. For LaRita, it was a pivotal time in music during those formative stages of her artistic development; music as a culture was in full swing at the time, making it palatable for her to engaged a nice range of music endeavoring, which shaped her own ideas and developed her sense of style, taste and appreciation. She is among the few artist who manages to escape categories and sing whatever is imaginable… from soul to jazz and more, it’s all in her ear and deep in her soul. LaRita developed a knack for writing, creating her own songs, and melding styles together out of her love of R&B and giving it her own twist.
Her music taste draws from extraordinary expressions of not only the Motown sound but Stax, Philly International and a plethora of artists ranging from Isaac Hayes, Earth Wind and Fire, George Duke, Santana, Miles Davis, The Ohio Players, Cold Blood, The Gap Band, Labelle, Phyllis Hyman, Chaka Khan, Sarah Vaughn, Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, and others on the smooth jazz and funk music scene like Bob Baldwin, Tom Brown, Pat Matheny and more. LaRita’s eclectic taste in music is rich and she is proud to be part of a vast exposure to some of the best music the world ever produced.
